emachines power supply issue

Hi,
I have a emachines 220 with an ATX power supply. It stopped working so I
have replaced it with a new one. When I plug the power cable in the power
supply turns on and stays on. I am unable turn in off except at the plug.
All the cables are connected correctly and I have also tried a second hand
one. Same problem.

Has the MB packed up?

The old power supply wouldn't turn on at all.

Cheers
Lenny

You did not say if the machine posted or it it's totally dead.

I work on a lot of machines and the motherboards and powersupplies on
emachines fail fairly often.

If the machine does not even so much as post...it's time of a new one!

The machine works fine and starts up into windows with no problems and also
shuts down too but the power supply will not turn off.

Two choices exist. Keep replacing parts until it is fixed. Or see
what has failed. Most all computer failures leave no visible
indication. We see failures with some simple and inexpensive tools
sold most everywhere including Kmart, Radio Shack and Lowes. You only
need one tool. Numbers from this two minute procedure will result in
a reply that identified the suspect. See by using numbers obtained in
"When your computer dies without warning....." starting 6 Feb 2007 in

Connector chart to locate each color:

In your case, the most important numbers are taken from green, gray,
and purple wires before and when system shuts off. Whereas that
procedure takes numbers when powering on, instead, those same numbers
are relevant just before and during shutdown. Those numbers will
report what is actually happening, identify a suspect, and indicate
where to find the solution. No speculation required.

Then I would not worry about it.
Just turn the machine off at the power strip

I have taken a look at that and it is confusing. There is nothing wrong with
the replaced power supply, I have tried 3 and they all do the same thing.
The supply stays on when the 4 pin molex is attached to the MB

Well then, why are you asking since you know nothing is wrong with
supplies? Keep replacing part until something works.

However, system works differently with and without four prong
connector? Good. Switch meter's dial to 20 VDC. Touch probes to
wires per procedure. Read and post numbers. Where is that complex?
Without those numbers, wild speculation says keep replacing parts
unitl something appears to work. Keep replacing parts until problem
goes away. Or learn what the problem is, why it happened, and how to
avoid it. Did you create this new problem? If so, learn from your
mistakes. Or keep replacing parts.
