Eliminating unneeded startup programs

I would like to stop unneeded programs from running and
slowing things down.

If you go Start | Run then enter 'msconfig' and go to the
startup tab it lists all the programs that start when you
boot. Is there a link to an explanation of which of these
obscure names you really need and which are unnecessary?

You can go here and dl the Sandra Software. Run the Performance and Tune Up
Wizard. It will give you some recommendations on services you can stop.
