I don't know what I did, but now paragraph marks and spaces for dots appear
on the screen, but don't print. In certain situations, it could be useful.

a. How do I turn it off
b. How do I turn it on.

On your Standard toolbar, there should be a little paragraph mark (¶). Click
it to toggle between showing and not showing the invisible characters.

Hope this helps.

What you must have done is hit the button to display non-printing format
marks. To turn that off and on, there is a button right to the left of the
zoom magnification on the toolbar. If you mouse over it it says "Show/hide
paragraph marks."

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for some reasons
why you might often find it helpful to see these "nonprinting characters" or
"formatting marks."
