Just have to say these 2 games are power hungry and they will eat your best graphic cards heart out.

I tested these 2 games on x1800 GTO and geforce 7800 both overclocked , frame rate is nothing amazing .

50-65 indoor average FPS
20-35 outdoor average FPS

Video settings just a little above medium, so il lsay medium-high settings

And when there is a lot of enemies on the screen it can drop easily to 10-15 FPS.

Running this game on FULL high settings Will require a beast of a card.

Too bad these 2 games are not using dual core technology it would have made things easier and smoother.

I run both on medium to high pretty flawlessly, though it does heat up thee ole gpu quite alot. Not amazing frame rates, but amazing graphics.

I run both of these games with a Geforce Fx 5900 card. Maybe not at the highest settings but its still looks great.

FEAR played Ok on my AGP 6800GT 256Mb on medium settings but wouldn't have it when I loaded it onto an almost identical machine but using an ATI 9800 Pro.

Dunno know about Oblivion, never played it.

There's nothing wrong with ATI cards although I do believe Nvidia currently has a slight edge in the current crop of cards. And I really don't like having to install MS's net framework in order to be able to use the ATI control panel.

And Nvidia does supply Linux drivers whereas ATI don't.

Hmm :D

I didn't actually mean to infer Nvidia were superior to ATI in my post though, here's the card specs, it's kinda obvious the 6800GT is the better card.

9800 Pro:

Core: 380Mhz
Memory: 340Mhz
Pipes: 8
Onboard memory: 128Mb

6800GT:

Core: 350Mhz
Memory: 500Mhz
Pipes: 16
On board memory: 256Mb

Actually, I didn't realise until just now that the 9800 Pro's core speed is actually a little faster. But the 6800GT wins out in all other areas.

With a 6600GT I had reasonable frames and a fair amount of lag in close quarters combat, ran the game at 1024x768 res on medium/low settings. However a crippling bug/error means no more Oblivion for me :(

Alf - What are the other specs of your new pc? :)

Pretty much the same CPU (3500 AMD) and same ol memory (nothing special :D) along with a 7900GT, 550W PSU, and a Asus SLI mobo.... the mobo is the top of the line for Asus. :D
As for Oblivion, it definitly play better, especially in the forested areas. with my 6800GT it stuttered pretty bad perhaps 10-20 FPS... with the 7900, its more like 30-?. I now plan on going SLI with this baby.... only $250 more!

Good luck with that, i have seen 7900's for about £140-ish. Hopefully you will get your fps to around 60 in intensive areas.

:D

*2Ghz cpu, 1 gig ram and 128mb card still going strong :D*

I run FEAR on an Asus sli premium, 1gb Crucial Ballistix, XFX 7900gt extreme edition and an Athlon 3700+

I can run on high settings and average around 80fps, and even when things get intense the frames don't drop below 40.

Its the smoothness that astounds me. 80fps may not seem alot but when you aren't dropping below 40 things seem much faster.

With an extra gig of memory and maybe a bit of a cpu overclock, I think it would fly.

I've never played Oblivion so I can't comment on that

My average fps for most games is about 20, but half life 2 plays about 40-50. You get used to it, but enjoy it so much more when your fps is high :D
