Ejecting the DVD drive with software

I can Eject with Windows Explorer every time I try it, but when I do
Eject with Windows Media Player, it only works every other time.

In those times when it doesn't work, it makes some noises and then
does nothing.

The eject button doesn't work so great, and I know I could use the
pinhole though I've never tried it.

(It's a Gateway SX2800 which has a vertical DVD drive, which I don't
like in general.)

When software wants to eject the disk tray, doesn't it send a simple
signal to Windows?

I think the difference is that in Explorer 'eject' always means eject;
you'll notice there's also a 'Close tray' option which exclusively does just
that.

With WMP the term 'eject' is used for both opening and closing the tray.
