Effects added to an element

I have added an effect to one element of a slide.

When the slide show is played the effect does not start until several
seconds after the slide is seen. This leaves a white space.

When I apply an exit effect the element disappears but the slide says
leaving another white space.

What have I missed?

What effect did you use?
Did you set the effect as on click or after previous?
Also, Change the speed of the effect to see if it gets better.
If you add an exit effect, it doesn't advance to the next slide. Do you want
to advance to the next slide automatically?
Kinda hard to guess what you are doing.
