eeprom reader not working

I have an old eeprom reader (remember those?) that is connected to my
box by RS232 cable. It worked fine under 98, but now that I've gone to
xp, this reader does not seem to be working. I'm not sure why. Should I
install a driver for it? Should it show up in the device manager tree?
(I don't think it ever did under the old system, but I don't quite
remember; it was an unobtrusive little box that I only use occasionally
and it never gave any trouble). Can anyone point me in a direction to a
solution? I have data to read and it's kind of urgent. Thanks for any help.

How is the EEPROM reader attached to the system? Does the program that
uses the device run in DOS or Windows? The device likely has no id that the
system can read so at best it could only be detected as an 'unknown device.'
At any rate, a lot more information would be needed to determine the fix.
The easiest and quickest fix might be to use a Windows 98 system. If the
task is urgent and you don't have the skills to determine how to get the
device working with Windows XP, you really have no choice but to use a
Windows 98 system. You could make your current Windows XP a dual boot
system (Windows 98 AND Windows XP, but that would require time and effort.

Get the driver. If it is so old that the manufacturer doesn't support
it anymore (i.e., no driver) or they don't exist anymore, you'll have to
use multi-booting or VMs (virtual machines), like with Virtual PC or
VMWare, to load an instance of an old enough OS that is supported by
your old driver.
