Editing writes over letters

Sometimes when I am writing if I go back to edit something that I worte
instead of adding it in it wirtes it over what has been written. EX I wrote
connor and went back ot make it Connor. I erased the c and typed C. Connor
should have come out but I got Cnnor instead. I then typed o and I got Conor.
Every letter I typed was written over the one that was there instead of being
added in. How do I stop this from happening?
 
Press the Insert key on the keyboard to toggle from Type Over to Insert.
