Editing Scanned Documents

I scanned my first document today, but cannot seem to be able to save it with
formatting in order to edit it. I used the Microsoft Office Document
Scanning tool. Is there a way to either save scanned docs in RTF, or some
other way to preserve formatting and be able to edit the document. Thanks.

Rather than the Document scanning tool, which produces a graphical image,
use the document imaging tool which is a rudimentary OCR (optical character
reading) application. If this is too simple then you need a better OCR
application. My personal favourite is Finereader.

Thanks very much Graham. However, I still don't seem to be able to save it
in a form that both saves the original formatting (which Adobe .pdf) does
allow, AND allows me to edit the document (which pdf does not allow-- at
least I don't know how to edit a pdf doc). Is there a way to save a scanned
document into an .rtf file, for instance, or some other format that allows
both saving the original formatting and also allows editing in MS Word?

Your assistance is much appreciated.

Best, Rick

I thought I had answered this - OCR is always going to be a compromise, but
there are some good software packages around. Finereader from version 5 to
the present has been excellent.

PDF is not an editable format either, though to some extent Acrobat (much
more expensive than Finereader) may make it so.
