Editing Imported Video

Could anyone explain the mystery as to why when I play or import video that
was recorded on my set top DVD from my set top VCR they playback on my
comuter with a distortion line at the bottom and a 2 inch darkend border on
the right side?

Tapes that I am dubbing to DVD are not copy protected prerecorded, they are
just VHS tapes of old programs and home movies.

If I am only recording television programs with my set top DVD recorder from
the cable line they play and import perfectly into my pc.

Can anyone direct me to a fix for this or know of a solution to this
problem?

I am running Windows XP MCE SPII

The software that I import my DVD's into and with is ArcSoft Showbiz DVD2

Media used is Imation DVD+R and DVD+RW

Thank you in advance for all your help!

TV's never show the whole picture, about 10% is missing known as overscan,
adn in the days of analogue this was often crap, like you are seeing.
Nowadays the overscan area can also contain info for other things like
teletext etc.
As your pc screen shows the whole picture it will show this.

The older the analogue signal (vhs tape) the worse this will be.

The darkening of the right side may be the way the tapes were stored, the
signal may have eroded.

So, after all of that, there isn't anything you can easily do to remoe this,
apart from when you play it on a tv most of it will be hidden again.

There might be something you can do within Move Maker; have a look at this
post:

Read down to where it says:

"Download this package for 15 readymade crop effects (3 on each side and 3
on center)
RehanFX Crop Effects Pack."

I had some VHS tape with distortion along the bottom and Rehan's 'Crop UP 3%
Effect' fixed the problem very nicely. You may need to read up on how to
create custom effects in WMM -- you can get started at this URL:

You will see there are various cropping schemes in that package. It is some
work to make these, but I found it to be worth the effort.
