Editing DVD movies

S

Soren

Hi,

I have bought a SONY DVD recorder which I use to dump
movies I make with my camcorder.

But when I try to import the *.vob files into the
moviemaker it totally locks up and I have to terminate
the program.

Anybody out there have any idea on how I can edit my
camcorder videos with my present setup!
(camcorder -> dvd-recorder -> computer)

Thanks'

If you can, cut out the dvd recorder bit. For several reasons, two being,
most editing apps will not accept mpegs, let alone vobs. When saving to a
dvd you compress the file quite a bit, then after editing you'll possibly
have to recompress it, which will mean you will lose a lot of quality.
If you have a digital camcorder tehn use firewire to capture the movie from
the cam, if you don't have firewire on the pc, pci firewire cards are only a
few pounds/dollars these days.
If it's an analogue cam you'll need to take a different route, so I await
more info from you on this score.
If you wish to carry on following your route, do a search on google for a
dvd ripping programme, which will extract the mpeg files from the vobs, then
convert these to an avi file, again search google for an mpeg>avi utility,
then happily edit away on the pc.
You may then have a problem getting it back to dvd, depending on what other
hardware you have.

Thank's for info.

Indeed it's a digital JVC camcorder and I have firewire
on my PC but it's one of the first JVC digital camcorders
without any DV out, firewire or usb so .....

I don't want to invest in a video grabbing card for the
PC so I guess that I will have to look for mpeg->avi
software, edit the video and put it back on DVD, though I
guess that I will experience video quality loss in this
process !
