does anyone know if you can scan a document in word and
edit it?...if so please explain thanks

Can you be a little more specific? If you can give more details I could probably help, is it that you're trying to edit a pysical paper which you scanned to upload to your PC? Because then you can only edit it pysically and not on a system of any kind, this is because when you scan it, it's always going to be in form of a photo.

In order to edit the document you need to scan it through OCR software that
will turn the graphic image into text. The best of these is Finereader - now
up to version 7 - but there is a rudimentary OCR capability built into Word
2002/3 accessed from Microsoft Office Tools.
