If you need to make those types of tweaks, and you know what you are
doing, then you create reg file or use the regedit interface for make your
changes.

This could reasonable, but unfortunately MS has changed the way to edit the
registry for this type of association too.

Well, the result is even worse. Now everyone is going to have to tell how
to change things via the registry instead of using the GUI. I think is a
terrible setback.

Try telling someone now how to fix their HTTP URL protocols when there is no
GUI to do it.

Or try, as in this thread, setting up an Edit protocol. As Keith indicates,
it still can be done, but now its much much more difficult to do and to
explain how to do.

To a point I agree. But it probably means we need to go more along the Doug
Knox/Kelly Theriot route and create/provide scripts to do this. The problem
with File Types being where it was is that the View and Folder Settings tabs
were fairly commonly used and you can't mess things up too much on them.
But File Types was in the same tab group and you could really mess your
machine up if you mishandled any changes there. So I agree that it should
have been removed from folder options, but probably should have been added
somewhere else, such as advanced system settings or some other UAC protected
place.

Yeah, removing it completely is a big mistake on their part in my opinion.
There's already someone in a post subsequent to this whose URL Mailto
protocol is all messed up and making WinMail default doesn't fix it.

Hi Keith,

I too would like to see the option to change the default action for "Edit"
to return to the GUI.

Essentially this change would be actioned through the reinstatement of the
File Types tab when clicking Tools > Folder Options in the Windows Explorer
window.

If you require more specifics could tell me who I need to lodge this request
with? I would be more than happy to oblige. Currently my default action to
"Edit" .jpg files is MS Paint, but the default action to "Open" is Adobe
Photoshop. Annoying to say the least to have to go into the registry to tweak
something that just worked quite nicely on Win2K.

Regards
Mike

I'm not sure I understand the question and unfortunately have not seen other
parts of this thread. So excuse me if I'm answering a question that has not
been asked.

If you right click on a file, one option is "Open with." That menu in turn
lists "default program" at the bottom. If you click on that, you can choose
the program you want to associate with that file. Once you've chosen it,
that program should open with a doubleclick of the mouse on any files of
that type. No need for registry changes.

"Open with" isn't the issue, it's the other options such as "Edit" and "Run"
etc which are inaccessible... unless you fancy tinkering round with the
registry.

In a post that has (at yet) drawn no replies, I too was seeking the
registry entry to make EDIT (on the right-click menu) open the SeaMonkey
browser editor.

"c:\\Program Files\mozilla.org\Seamonkey\Seamonkey.exe" - edit

That's the likely path. If the exact place to add it to the registry is
known, please pass it along. Tnx.

Found it. P.I.T.A. One wonders why the useful FILE TYPES tab was
removed in Vista (security?).

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\Edit\command]
@="\"c:\\program files\\mozilla.org\\Seamonkey\\Seamonkey.exe\" -edit %1"
