Edit Formula

Something recently changed in excel when I am creating
formulas and I can't figure out what it is?

When I type in a bunch of numbers down a column and I
click on autosum - the box that open in the cell
containing the formula is really large and covers up about
4 cells including cells that i need to select in order to
put in the correct rangel of cells. This is not the
function wizard it is just the box that opens within the
cell.

Another example - I want to edit a cell with a formula in
it - I double click on the cell and I get this large box
that again covers up cells that contain numbers I want to
calculate.

Anyone every seen this before and know how to fix it - it
didn't always do this?

Have you changed this setting?
Tools > Options > Edit tab, "Edit directly in cell".

No I have not made a change to that option - that option
is checked and I am able to edit the formula in the cell -
however I just get the formula in a really large box that
seems to cover the other cells.
