Edit downloaded dvd with MovieMaker

I have some old home movies that were transfered to DVD format. I would like
to make a family movie using only parts of it. I was hoping to use Windows
movie maker. I just finished a slideshow of old family photos for a upcoming
family reunion using it. My plans are to edit the DVD and burn copies for all
my family members. It's important I get this done quickly. Our reunion is
11/12/05. It will be my grandmother's 106th bday.
I came here and found out I could download the DVD to my pc by using
DVDShrink. I did that. Now it is saved on my pc, but it is the wrong format
to import into MovieMaker.
If anyone could help, I would appreciate it.
Please be very detailed with your instructions, I'm a novice at this.

For speed and ease of use I'd reccommend downloading the free trial of ulead
videostudio9, this will import the files direct from the dvd, no need for
anything else, and allow editing. You could save the work you've done in
movie maker as a dv-avi, import into videostudio and then use this same app
to burn the dvd.

Otherwise you need to probably de-mux the audio-video, then use an app to
convert from mpeg to avi, the edit and reconvert back to mpeg and burn. The
conversion wuill each degrade the quality. Check out www.papajohn.org
importing source files > Video > mpeg-2 for more help on this way.
