edexter - Getting the Images to Work

I've been using the Hosts file + edexter + Zone Alarm + Proxomitron
forever.

A little while ago, I realized I was no longer being served up the images
from edexter's image folder. I've heard others have had the same problem,
but none of the Usenet posts I saw provided an answer.

Has anyone found a solution?

It's not a *horrific* problem, since it'll normally serve up it's internal
images. But I liked the external images with the hyphen in it so I could
see which images were being killed and replaced.

Another thing...how should edexter be set up in Zone Alarm? I once knew,
but I've forgotten. Should it be as a local server? Is that the only
option I should use? (I use an older version of ZA, so the options may
have changed.)

TIA.

Happened to me a while ago. My cure was to right-click the tray icon, de-
select the "Use images" option, disconnect from ISP, close browser,
reboot, restart eDexter, and reselect "Use images".

Don't know about Zone Alarm, but in my firewall (Outpost) eDexter is
blocked from making any internet connection. But, the following quote is
taken from the ReleaseNotes.txt file in the eDexter folder.

<quote>
FIREWALL: eDexter does not open a port to the outside world,, nor does it
need one. It works entirely within your local IP address 127.0.0.1.
This version does block port 80 to the outside world. However, if you
connect to the Internet you should consider obtaining a personal
firewall, such as ZoneAlarm. Most firewalls, including ZoneAlarm
allow you to specifically block external access to your computer FROM the
net, and to allow only those programs that you specifically permit,
to connect TO the net. For example, ZoneAlarm will allow you to deny
eDexter's access to the Internet.

If you use a firewall, configure the firewall to disallow eDexter's
access to the internet but to enable eDexter's access to the local
machine. Since eDexter only operates on your localhost IP-address of
127.0.0.1, eDexter may be able to operate even if your firewall is
set to block eDexter from a connection with your local machine. If
your firewall acts in this fashion, you may as well set your firewall to
disallow both local and internet connections. It then doesn't make any
difference.

Yikes. That's a lot to go thru considering it happens almost all the time.
I'm guessing the whole set-up must be unstable. I wonder what it is
specifically that corrupts edexter.

Changes in the REGISTRY.
I use RegSeeker and clean the
registry about once a week.

I had a problem with that last
week with eDexter after I used
the program, BUT I rebooted
and it was ok since.

All the time ?? My turn to go YIKES. I have used eDexter for more than 3
years, and its happened to me once ..... and that was after some other
program I was trying out crashed my PC. I didn't blame eDexter, blamed
the other program.

Your earlier post mentioned Proxomitron. I have used Proxo before, but
never in conjunction with eDexter. Proxo is extremely powerful, so much
more powerful than I ever need (considering the learning curve to be
'proficient' with Proxo). Maybe, just maybe, one of yor Proxo filters is
causing the grief with eDexter. Just a suggestion, try Edexter with Proxo
turned off.

ps ..... which version of eDexter ? whicj version of Proxo ?

my eDexter is 1.42, Proxomitron 4.5j

It happens no matter which version of edexter or Proxo I use. But
rebooting brings the images back again. I guess I just need to reboot more
often. :o) I tend to go for weeks at a time without rebooting.

I'll also try turning Proxo off to see if a filter might be interfering.
I don't see how it could, but it never hurts to check.

I too have had this problem. I was e-mailing backwards and forwards with
the creator of the program and he was giving me all sorts of help but
nothing worked. I even reformatted and started again to no avail. I
tried dns kong as well. Now sadly the creator has not responded to any
of my e-mails I have sent saying I still have the problem. Saying that
though I have yet to try the recent suggestion of knocking off the
images, rebooting and re-enabling them. So just maybe!!!
