eBay Account Update ?

I have an email from eBay (?) asking me to update my account information. I
have not purchased any item from eBay but they claim I owe them money. I am
curious if this is a scam. It arrived in my inbox with an incomplete
address. Has this happened to others in the newsgroup? Thanks.

Of course it's a scam! I got the same e-mail several times and never had
an ebay account!

There should be a link in the e-mail. just position you mouse over it and
look at
the address carefully... it is a spoofed ebay web page.

Not just a scam, but an attempt to get enough data to steal
your identity. Then they will empty your bank account and
also buy a ton of stuff with your credit.

You can always goto ebay yourself (do not follow any links on the e-mail)
and check (assuming you do have an ebay account).
If you have no ebay account at all, it's probably a scam.

If your e-mail client doesn't show you the link's true URL when you hover
over the link, right-click on the body of the e-mail or use a menu to view
the message source (i.e., look at its body in plain text format). Then look
for the <A href=...>sometext</A> HTML tag that tells you were that link
really goes. If it doesn't go to an ebay.com domain then you know it is a
scam.

Then again, why would you be clicking on a link in an e-mail when you can
just as easily go to the web site professed for use within that e-mail?
Clicking on the [fraudulent] link is not a hell of a lot easier than just
enter the site's URL in the address bar of your browser or in the taskbar
(if the address bar is configured to display). If you get e-mails claiming
to be updates from Microsoft, just go to Microsoft's own web site to get
them automatically.

Yes it's a scam... and so is the one telling you how to collect the money
from the auction SALE you just made (or rather the one you didn't).
