What does the "x" in .docx signify on documents created with the Home &
Student (non-commercial) version of Office 2007? Why can't people with Word
(.doc) software open documents attached to my e-mail?

X is because it's XML-based and extensible. Office 2007 has a new file
format. People using the older version of Office need to download a file
converter from Office Update to open your files, or else you need to save as
Word 97-2003 format from Word before sending out attachments.
