Just purchased a new machine with Windows XP Home and
find myself a bit bewildered with the fact that there is
no "Spell Check" in the e-mail area. Yes, I do have a
college degree and my spelling ability is okay but I most
definitely am not one who has great skills with the key
board and the availability of "Spell Check" would save me
a bunch of time, as in the past with other sytems. Did
Microsoft miss something here or am I not seeing the
light? Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks in
advance!

No, Outlook Express, the default "free" email client with XP doesn't
have a spell checker. If you install Office, OE will use the Office
spell checker.

There are various ways to add spell checking to OE without Office.
Suggest you search on google for this. Or others will post here.

I like and use Mozilla which provides an email client with spell
checking. it's free. see www.mozilla.org. The web browser is terrific
and I like it better than IE for most work.

Greetings --

Outlook Express, as you've just discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the
Works _Suite_ (which includes Word, not the regular Works). There are
also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware solutions available at any of
the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

Mozilla also has junk mail controls for spam that include Bayesian
filtering (it "learns" as you use it).

It also allows for importing e-mail messages from Outlook, Outlook
Express and Eudora.

The newest stable release is 1.5.
