E-mail Merge where recipients NOT in Outlook contacts

I have a spreadsheet which contains all the data I need for an e-mail
merge.

Word 2003 correctly finds the data and starts to create e-mails, but
when it reaches "Mail Merge is ready to produce your e-mail messages"
a dialog box comes up titled "Check Names" saying "No matches found
for" and the first of my e-mail addresses.

This is apparently because the e-mail address are not in my Outlook
contacts. And I don't want to put all of them into my Outlook
contacts!

When I use Outlook to create a message to someone not in my contacts,
it doesn't complain. Only Word complains. Is there a way around
this?

Thanks.

PS. Apologies if this is the wrong group. I found no other group
that seemed more relevant.

Upon further investigation, the problem only seems to occur when my e-
mail address field contains multiple addresses separated by
semicolons.

This syntax works fine within Outlook, but not when Word is in charge.
