I've just reinstalled Office 2002 with Outlook. Now the e-mail address does
not automatically fill in when I start typing in the name of the recipient as
it did before. How do I turn this feature back on?
Thank you,
John

You answered your own question. You just reinstalled Outlook. You haven't
sent enough messages to populate your new autocompletion cache.
The feature is on by default.

Russ,
Thanks for replyoing so quickly. THere is more to the problem than I
origianlly described.
When I click on the little "To..." icon in the upper l;eft of the screen I
get the following error message.:

The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated
with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or
deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove
this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help.

(It would be great if error messages could open the help dialog that they
are refering to.)

I tried following the Outlook Help about going to Tools/E-mail
Accounts/Directory but nothing that I did seemed to work. I have a Contacts
folder that I've been using for years. My Contacts folder has 591 entries in
it. For some reason the "To..." dialog box is not seeing my Contacts
folder's contents.

How can I get Outlook to look in my Contacts folder for e-mail addresses?

Thank you,
John

Completely different issue.
That error means you migrated your Outlook data to this installation
incorrectly.
Provide further details.

Russ,
On installing Outlook it creates a Outlook.PST file. After I install
Outlook I find and delete that file. The next time that I open that file it
asks for the location of the .PST file. I point that question to my
Outlook.pst that I have saved on my external hard drive. That's what I've
done in the past and it worked. How should I point Outlook to use the
Outlook.PST file that I have on my external hard drive? What should I do to
correct this problem?
Thank you,

Probably better to use the supported method for changing your default PST
file:
- Go to Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Data Files > Add...
- Add the PST you'd like as your new default, then Close > OK to exit the
Options dialog
- Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts
- Select the PST you just added in the "Deliver New e-mail to the following
location" dropdown (it will most likely appear just below the current
default Personal Folders file) > Finish
- Exit and Restart Outlook
- You can now close the previous default PST (R-click on that pst folder
while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername> Folders"). If you have
any information in your former PST that you'd like to transfer to your new
default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the other before you close
the old one.

Russ,
Thanks again for your help.

I followed your directions as best that I could but...
I went to Tools/Options/Mail Setup/Data Files and tried to add another .pst.
Outlook wouldn't let me add another pst. I tried several times but it
wouldn't let me add another .pst. It wouldn't let me remove the original
..PST.
Next I tried improvising--wish me luck. I went to File/Open/Open Outlook
Data File and opened another file that I created earlier called test.pst. I
opened the test file and treied switching my e-mail account to the test.pst
file. This worked and I tried deleting the original.pst file but Outlook
crashed every time I tried this. Finally I pointed my mail account back to
the origianl.pst and closed the test.pst file.
Now Outlook has the addresses in to Contact folder for e-mail addressing
purposes.
I went back to Tools/Options/Mail Setup/Data Files and there are no .pst
files listed there and Outlook crashes whenever I try to add the original.pst.
Other than that Outlook seems to be funtioning.
Do I need to worry about the lack of a .pst in the Tools/Options/Mail
Setup/Data Files dialog?
Thank you,
John
