dxdiag crashes at DirectInput

1. Directinput
I'm having problems with almost every game I try to run.
At first I thought that there is something wrong with my
graphic drivers. All games on startup reported an error:
The instruction at "0x77f58267" referenced memory
at "0x00000078". The memory could not be "read". So I
installed new DirectX (9.0b) but it didn't help. I ran
DirectX Diagnostic (dxdiag) and it reported this: DxDiag
has detected that there may have been a problem accessing
DirectInput the last time this program was used. Would you
like to bypass DirectInput this time? If I choose Yes,
all's fine. If I chose No, DxDiag crashes. What to do?

2. Rundll32.exe - Application Error
When I try to open "Game Controllers" in Control Panel, I
get a popup window showing:
Rundll32.exe - Application Error:
The instruction at "0x77f58267" referenced memory
at "0x00000078". The memory could not be "read".

First try in Device Manager to "Disable" the Game port. The wrong one may
have been set up. I get the both the same symptoms as you when "Creative
Game Port" is enabled. I need to install manually a "Standard Game Port".

Now if I could only get my Sidewinder past the "Not Connected" mode.

Nah, I disabled the gameport and checked the BIOS for an
enabled on board, and everything looks in order. The
correct gameport is installed.

I am running a Santa Cruz sound card if that makes a
difference.

Any other takers?

Hi Seibol,

I would unplug all game controllers, and repair windows.

Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Now, test the game controller panel in Control Panel. If it works,
use the Add... button to install and test your game controller.

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and

Thanks Jimmy S.

Although I did try that this morning it did not work. I
did a fresh install and before I installed any drivers I
checked the icon in control panel to check the game
controllers, and it gave me the same error. But I ran
dxdiag with DX8.1 installed and did not have a problem
accessing Direct Input.

I did switch out my ram with another module but I still
came up with the same error.

So where do we go from here. I am gonna install DX9.0b
now and see if I can run my games.

Here is a list of what I have in my box, maybe I am
missing something.

Athlon XP 1600+
Asus A7V8x Deluxe
512MB PC3200 Buffalo RAM (winbond)
Maxtor 80GB 133/7200
eVGA GeForce FX 5900SE (nvidia 53.03)
Santa Cruz (4193)
Asus TV 7133FM tuner card
Via 4 in 1 drivers (4.51)

Hi Seibol,

Sure, set a restore point and install DX 9, I believe it does so automatically in any
case, and test the game controllers applet again, however you should install your
Windows updates, specifically SP1 which fixes an identical error connected to the
Fujitsu Universal Serial Bus (USB) infrared remote control.

To see if there's an issue being caused by the Santa Cruz, disable the card in the
Control Panel, or physically remove the card with power off, and static on fingers discharged.

I believe that was the problem.
I installed DX9 from the DirectX site instead of Windows
update, as it was rebooting after install, I unplugged all
unnecessary USB connections. That included a Sony stick
reader and a Universal Serial Bus (USB) infrared remote
control for my TV tuner. Then magically it worked. The
thing is, service pack 1 did not correct the problem u
were talking about with my module.

Thanks for the help Jimmy S.

Phydeaux,
Chances are if you disable one of the gameports in the BIOS rather than
Device Manager your device will work. My past experience has shown that
merely disableing gameports in Device Manager usually doesn't help.
