Hi,
I have a Dell dimension 8100, which is 2 1/2 years
old.... i am having problems when playing dvds. When i
play a dvd, i hear a loud buzzing noise corresponding to
the light flickering on the front of my dvd drive...this
makes it impossible to listen to dvds properly as the
volume of the voices seem to go down! I dont get this
problem with audio cd's, or listen to mp3 files. Can
anyone suggest anything? I have contacted Dell, but they
have been of little help

Thanks
Alex

You might try cleaning the drive. There's much more data compacted
on a DVD than a CDR or one loaded with MP3 files. If cleaning fails
to resolve the problem, you may be looking at replacing the drive.

The problem with notebook combo drives (ones that are both CDR and DVD
play) is that they are fragile and easily become mis-aligned. I'm
not familiar with the Dimension 8100, but if you're a handy guy, you
may be able to replace the drive yourself - unless of course if you
have an extended warranty on your Dell.
