DVD Writer no longer recognises blank DVD

Hi
I have been having a bit of trouble with my DVD Writer lately. If I insert a
DVD that is already written to then the DVD plays OK. However, if I insert a
blank DVD the drive just spins it and does not open the burning program as
it used to. When I hit the eject button the tray eventually opens and the
disc is still spinning which it never did before.
WinXP Home SP2.
Would appreciate any help on this one.

Have you tried a "cleaner" disk, which may clear up laser-related
problems? They are available from PC and multi-media retailers - for
about $10.
