is there a patch / ms utility to allow xp to natively write
to dvd-r or dvd+r via explorer similat to the cd-r
functionality available?

There is not. You will need to buy a DVD Writing software program. I
highly recommend Nero from www.nero.com ;)

Usually your DVD Burner comes with the necessary software though, so you
may want to check that.

Actually, DVD writers *always* come with DVD writing software.
Otherwise, there would be no reason to purchase them. (Think about that.)

Not so... both CD & DVD burners can be and are sold as "Bulk" units. The
customer receives a bare drive, wraped in bubble wrap in a very nice box.
Thats it! no cables, cd's nothing else. This saves the purchaser a few
bucks. Most who make these type purchases realize there is no software
included often already having appropriate SW for burning/playing purposes.

FWIW,

This is how most people buy their products if they purchase it online
(bulk). The reason being that most people who upgrade (or install their
own hardware) usually have existing software from a previous peice of
hardware or have actually purchased the full program. If you buy a
drive in the store, you are going to be hard pressed to find Bulk units.
