And, of course Windows Media Player will play dvd's if you have a codec for
playing dvd's(which you have, if you have Power DVD installed, otherwise
download and install K-Lite Codec Pack: http://www.codecguide.com/, which
contains 2).

DVD support is only available in Zoom Player Professional ($27.95 - $35.95)

http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/
Zoom Player comes in multiple flavors:
Zoom Player Standard, a flexible feature rich Media Player that for all
its features and goodness remains bloat-free, Zoom Player Professional,
which on top of being a great Media Player with additional
power-features, incorporates the most powerful DVD Front-End you could
imagine (and even a few features you didn't think of imagining) and
Zoom Player WMV Professional, adding Windows Media DRM playback
support.

Zoom Player Standard remains Free for Non-Commercial use

Larry asked about a freeware program that could play DVD movies.
And you can't play a DVD movie on Zoom Player 4.51 Standard,
I have just tried that.

My favorite is
VLC media player
http://www.videolan.org/

Hi CoMa tried VLC media player
Looked good but had sound probs in parts
I thought it was the DVD (a copy)

So I tried my usual Roxia player, no probs

Should I have loaded some codecs for VLC?

It's you-know-who
And I'm not you-know-where
Leave your message after the you-know-what

Latest version is 0.8.5

Try to change the "Default" Audio output module in VLC
to "Win32 waveout extension output" module
Settings-> Preferences-> Audio-> Output modules-> Advanced options

If you want you can try out the latest nightly build version
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/?C=M;O=D

I have noticed when I play a DVD on VLC that the sound is
louder if the sound is set as 5.1 (Audio-> Audio Device-> 5.1)

Have you tried to change the sound level in
Settings-> Preferences-> General Audio Settings-> Default audio volume

And maybe also change
Advanced option -> Audio output volume step
