The Philips DVD 642 will play MPEG4, DivX, XviD, and a number of other
formats. I picked one up for sale at CompUSA for $59.00. It also plays
WMA, MP3, JPEG, PhotoCD, VCD, SVCD, etc.

It also offers component and digital optical outputs, and progressive scan.

Why spend $139 - $249? This is a very good player.

Does it play AVI format? I think that's the original point. I know if I
were in the market for a DVD player AVI and wide screen would be definite
requirements.

It plays DivX and XviD, which are variants of .AVI, and "hacks" to play
other .avi formats. There are forums for this player and the hacks and
firmware changes that are available...such as removing macrovision, output
in PAL or NTSC, etc. It has numerous options for widescreen formats: 16:9,
2.35.1, and a couple variations on 4:3 pulldowns. It is a very flexible
machine with flashable ROM which allows experimentation with it.

There are Plenty of players that play AVI and Divx/Xvid on disk but here is
one that plays it with out the disk.

Also here is some article about DVD players and WMV-HD format.
This aussie brand says it has a dvd player that plays wmv. It will be out
for christmas $429(AUS).

Nice but a bit pricey. Seems to do just about everything. Sounds like WMV9
is the newest thing.
