Dvd player cannot create overlay

When I try to play a dvd, which used to work fine, now my
player says cannot create overlay. I downloaded the latest
directx but my direct draw and direct 3d and whatever that
other one is say not available. I guess i need to be able
to enable them so my dvd player will work but i do not
know how. please help
