dvd movies won't play

when u put a dvd in the cd-rom it is not able to read the dvd it says
something about not having a dvd decoder installed on the computer, i have
windows xp installed on my computer. please help

You need a proper codec to play a DVD movie in Windows XP. Usually a
computer with a DVD player comes with software made to play DVDs. If yours
did not - or you lost it somehow...

ok i tried everything that you all said and it still want play my unit is a
hp cd-writer+8000 whatever that means so i dont know if you see dvd movies or
not. HELP AGAIN PLEASE

I believe that you have a CD burner...Not a DVD burner. You need a DVD unit
to play and/or burn DVDs.

Windows XP and Windows Media Player do not read DVD movies "right out of the
box." You need to install a DVD Decoder module, which Microsoft does not
have. You can look for one off the web. I know two that work well: PowerDVD
or WinDVD.
