DVD lists itself as a DVD ram rather than a Player writer.

I am unable to use the dvd. It doesn't respond as the secondary master. There
is also a cd writer player (slave). The cd works. What's thowing me is that
my system is listing two other DVD drives that I don't have (G & H) refering
to them as
image drives from nero. I've uninstalled and they reappear upon boot.
Anyone got any ideas? I think I got more than one problem here.

I wondered about a new DVD drive that showed as a RAM drive in Explorer after I
installed it, even though it showed as the actual drive make/model everywhere else.
I found out that if the drive has RAM capability that's the reason it shows as a RAM
drive in Explorer.

As for the drive not responding you may want to check the manufacturers site to se
if they have an update for the drive.

Also, have you tried reversing the Master/Slave on the drives?

Instead of uninstalling Nero Image Drive, open it and uncheck the boxes to "Enable"
or click the "Disable" button and close out.

Open nero and under tools click on Nero imagedrive. Uncheck the 2 virtual
drives and see if that helps the other problem.

thx Brian, I went into nero and found the control keys for the virtual drives. That's straight. But I'm still dealing with the DVD ram not responding. As a player.
I did switch it around, making the dvd the slave; jumpers all correctly
placed. It's not recognizing either dvds or cds when loading. I once heard
that sometimes the registry gets messed up, but I have yet to find a download
or registry command to heal the drivers. The system itself confirms that all
iis well and there is no better update than what I have. I'll keep at it.
And thank you for your help.

Thanks Bud,
Your advice was of great help. I'm still working on the
other part of the problem. The DVD/wr/player does not recognized dvds when
loading. Neither will it play cds. There is a cd player/writer that works.
Does anyone know where I might download drivers for a Lite-On DVDRW LH-18A1P
?? microsoft is the manufacturer but I have't seen anything focused on this
model. Question ? Would the original xp install have tools to restore the
drive ??

Try updating the firmware and read/follow the instructions fully/carefully (Link
below downloads).

Looking back I see no mention of your system specs, does it meet the requirements?

PC Required:
Pentium 4 1.3GHz or higher CPU
128MB or higher RAM are required.
HDD must have access time < 20ms; with a minimum of 650MB free space.
9GB free space for creating a DVD image file (9GB for double layer;
5GB for single layer).

Hi Brian,
I got home a little while ago, had some supper and checked the
posts. First I really want to thank you for taking the time to walk me
through this stuff. I just downloaded the zipfile and hardcopied the
instructions. I'll let you and the community know how I made out.

Hi Brian. Well it's ten oclock and I've had no luck getting the dvd to
recognize the disks. My system is: Xp serviceP2 using an amd CPU 1800+ with
an 80G HD an old floppy and newer CD. I ended up using a Flash drive to
update the DVD and the computer said that the update was successful. So I'm
still searching. When I find out what it is I'll be sure to let you know.
I'm done for the night .

Is the DVD drive a new addition or one that's been installed and working for quite
some time? I suspect it's new from reading all of your posts in this thread and you
connected it to an existing IDE ribbon cable that has another drive already connected
to it. If this is the case, is the cable an older 40 wire-40 pin or the newer 80
wire-40 pin cable? If it's the older 40/40, the new DVD drive may require the 80/40
in order to properly operate.

Yeah I'm still up thinking about it,
the drive is somewhat new. about 3 months old. I installed it and had it
working fine. Then I got a new hard drive. Installed it had some boot
problems that I got through but it wasn't pretty. I should have taken notes
but I didn't. After that is when all this started. I thought about going
back to the last known good configuration but I wiped out all the events and
logs. The days to go back to weren't there. It's an 80 wire 40 pin cable.
Would a bad cable do that ?? wouldn't the operating system mention that it
was having trouble communicating with the drive like it does with the printer
??? I'll check you out tomorrow.

Yes, a bad cable would/could/can cause issues without notification of the cable
being damaged. I've been through that before with an exposed wire with the most
minute scraped covering touching a part of the case which I found on a wim and used a
magnifying glass.

Another thing to try would be deleting all of the entries listed except "Default"
in the registry key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\System\MountedDevices

Windows will re-enumerate the devices on reboot.

Hi Brian,
I went into the registry, and found HKEYMachineSystemMounted
Devices.
My default has no address. No value. All the other settings have
addresses. I didn't want to delete the settings yet before I was sure about
the address for default. Also, how would I boot it ?

The "Default" should have no value at all and should not be removed. Once you have
deleted all of the entries Except Default, close regedit and reboot the machine, the
values will be rebuilt on reboot.

Before you remove the entries Export the Mounted Devices key first so you can
import it back in should the need arise. Do not import it unless it is truly needed.
