Just purchased and installed a DVD R+RW. It came with the obligatory useless
stuff (programs) that tried to put crap in my Start Up and so on.
I want to use this burner for the normal things (movies, etc.) but also to
backup things (such as the OS).
Any recommendations for really good freeware that will accommodate the
above?

Thanks in advance

For data backups, I highly recommend CDBurnerXP Pro:
http://cdburnerxp.se/

I use it with by DVD and CD burners and it works like a champ without
the bloat of crap like Nero and Roxio.
