dvd firmware upgrade gone bad

I just tried to update my Sony DVDRW DRU 510 firmware. When I rebooted I got
the blue screen of death. Safe Mode will load but that is about it.

If you disconnect the DVD drive, does windows boot normally?

If you uninstall the CD drivers in safe mode, and then boot normally,
does that help any? Chances are the drive is toast, but try anyway.

drive be toast?

Firmware updating carries a small but non-zero risk of rendering the
object in question entirely useless. Especially if you don't read the
instructions in their entirety first. Some of the CD flashing utils
I've seen are big time scary. They have instructions like, remove the
other CD from the IDE cable, and set this one to master. This will
attempt to flash all drives on the cable, even if they're not CDs. Or
they want to make sure there is no CD in the drive when the flashing is
happening. The later ones are usually better. But still.

The last thing is to try to re-flash the drive.

Repair Installation of Windows XP.

Whether or not you can re flash in safe mode, will depend entirely on
your flashing utility. The only way to know is to try.

Before we go this route, let's back up a few steps. See if you can get
windows to boot in normal mode by disconnecting the DVD.

This seperates CD problem from terrible coincidence. Or other problems
caused by flashing that do not affect the drive itself.

If it works, we have a CD problem.

Actually, I would only do this if all other methods fail. Wait to see if
there are any other suggestions offered before repairing your XP
installation. If you do decide to repair it, READ ALL of the information
provided on the web page.
