Here's a msg he gets every time he boots up:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

And the info on the DVD drive is:

Drive: E:
Model: _NEC DVD_RW ND-4551A
Driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys, 5.01.2600.2180
(English), 8/4/2004 13:00:00, 49536 bytes

He plays a LOT of games, and I'd estimate about only 1 in 10 of the disks he
tries to play works. The drive either doesn't recognise any info on the disk
(tried the disks on mine and they work like a charm - same thing goes for the
ones he gets installation errors on - cyclic redundancy or files missing or
not verifiable, but none of this happens on my pc)

BT Broadband Errors

We're both connected to the same BT Home Hub, me by a Belkin Wireless, and
mine works fine. I've tried his with an ethernet and 2 different USB cables
but his runs so slow u can c snails go past. Patches that take 12 mins on
mine take 132 HOURS on his!!!
I've done a destructive system recovery on his PC (to put it back to how it
was in the box) and updated the drivers.Thanx - sorry 4 the length of the post

Well, is the card the LE or the SE?

You could try a drive cleaner but it sounds like he needs to get a new
CD/DVD reader (or burner). There are multiple lasers on these devices. One
for CDs and one for DVDs. It's not unusual for one to "burn out" before the
other. Just replaced one of mine because the CD portion was becoming
unreliable although the DVD portion worked perfectly.
