DVD drive running slow

About a week ago, while ripping a CD to my laptop, the program froze and I
had to eject the CD to get things running again. The drive hasn't been the
same since. It used to rip CDs at about 10.4x, now it's running at max 4.1x.
It's also having trouble playing DVDs--the picture and sound drag and skip
constantly. It's like the drive just can't function at normal speed anymore.
This computer is only about 5 months old. Is there anything I can do to get
my drive back to normal?

Your drive is probably running in PIO mode instead of UltraDMA mode. Go
to this page by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. He has an explanation, a fix-it
utility, and manual instructions if you prefer them.
