DVD Drive Problems

My DVD drive has been going on the fritz recently and I can't figure
out what's up. First of all, XP (SP2) reports it as a CD Drive
instead of a DVD drive. And It won't play any content - I've tried
both a DVD movie and a CD game (both of which used to work on this
machine). But Windows definitely knows it's there and can read the
content - that is, I can navigate around the folders on the DVD and
see the video files, cab's, etc. Anybody know what's going on? I'm
not a noob so please don't ask if things are plugged in and such.
I've checked that there are no errors in Device Manager and there are
no new drivers available.

Thanks,
J

Sounds like the drive is failing. Either boot with Knoppix or a rescue
system CD to test or swap out the drive for a known-working one.
