DVD drive no longer working

My DVD drive stopped working after I installed a Windows update for my laptop
running Windows Vista Home Premium. I checked Device Manager and the driver
is no longer there. I tried to restore my computer but I got the blue screen
when restarting and starup repair was unable to fix it. So I restored it to
an even earlier point so that my computer could boot. However my DVD drive
still does not work.

Shaw,

You say that in Device Manager the "driver" is no longer there. Is this a
typo? That is, is the "drive" or the "driver" no longer there? If only the
driver is missing, but the drive is still there, try uninstalling the
CD/DVD-ROM Drive and rebooting. The idea is to have Vista detect the drive
upon reboot and install it properly. Let us know the story.
