No, the vendor will supply a manual (either paper, electronic or web
link) that lists the "maximum" for each "type" of media. It is then up to
"you" the consumer to by disks that have speeds less than or equal to your
CD drive maximums. Also, as Mike said, it is up to "you" the consumer to
set the CD's recording speed at a speed less than or equal to the media's
maximum recording speed. Be sure to pay close attention to R/W's, their
initial speed is normally a lot greater than their rewrite speed, which most
"consumers" fail to change when rewriting, causing what they think be a
"coaster" when in fact if they "slow" down the recording speed, the CD will
record just fine.
Note, you can use media rated higher than what your CD drive is capable,
you'll just record at the drive's maximum speed - but in most cases, you've
wasted money, as higher speed recording means higher quality media,
resulting in higher prices.
