depending on what software you are using to do burns
there is an option to switch between DVD and CD, example
I need to switch on Nero from one to the other. Don't
forget a DVD blank is a different format for the reader
in your burner/player

I have the same problem with my nec 1300a dvd/cd
Using Nero 5.5.9 I can select dvd or cd, didn't make a difference.
dvd is fine but cd will only burn once then it will not recognise it as RW

Since you both have the same problem with the same hardware, I'd check
with the drive mftr.'s tech support. Also look for a firmware update. I
have Nero 6 and it has no trouble burning cd's or dvd's, so even though
you have an older Nero I don't think that's where the problem lies
(although it can't hurt to see if there is a program update for your
version on Nero's site). In any case, from what you both have posted, I
don't think this is an operating system issue (XP).

Nero is a 'mastering' type program that burns in ISO sessions. This is
essentially a CD-R technique, and once you have burned a session all
you can do is add further ones. In Nero, on the first occasion you need
to select 'Start Multisession' and subsequently 'Continue Multisession'

If you want to use a CD-RW as a genuinely file by file, drag and drop
device you need to install the associated InCD, and format CD-RW disks
using that: They will then be things you can open in My Computer like a
floppy and use in the same way

Thanks Alex for your comment. Even if I tick the option to add files later,
it won't let me. I got the message: "Sorry your compiliation cannot be
written on this kind of disc" Only a brand new CD-RW is recognise as RW, as
soon I burn something on it, Nero tells me it is not CD- RW. I cannot add to
it and cannot erase the data ( even though there is that option in Nero)

Nero itself does not operate in this mode. It is really a CD-R method,
that writes whole batches of files in 'sessions'. When you first use a
disk take 'Start Multi session' and you will subsequently be able to use
'Continue Multi session' to add a further set. The InCD that handles
drag and drop to a CD-RW is entirely separate software. Once you have
installed that and formatted a CD-RW for it to use (in My Computer,
r-click the drive, Format) you open the disk in Explorer or My Computer
and use it in the same way as you would a hard disk. And do *not*
attempt to use Nero itself on that disk
