DVD/CD Drive not reading CDs

I'm trying to install Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 from an original Microsoft
Office 2000 Professional CD onto my Window XP Home laptop.

My drive shows up under My Computer but when I click on it it says:
"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it
could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows"

I have tried:
-restaring the laptop.
-uninstalling and reinstalling the device drivers
-cleaning the CD
-a different (original) CD with something else on it.

With no joy.

TIA for any suggestions.

DVD's and CD's use a different laser to read the content, maybe the laser
for the CD is dirty(dust) have you tried using a lens cleaner? something
like this:
