DVD/CD Burner

I tried to create a recovery disc for my system that I just purchased. I
have a HP Pavillion. My DVD/CD Rom drive doesn't recognize the blank disc.
It gives me an error and it says "The disc you inserted is not empty. Pls.
insert a blank disc" Any thoughts on how to fix this problem?

My HP Presario gives a different error message, but still insists on
a blank disk, if I give it a DVD+RW disk for the recovery disk. I've
forgotten exactly kind of disk is supposed to work with it, but I
think it's either DVD-R or DVD+R. It's definitely not all kinds of DVDs.
The error messages don't make this clear.
