I recently went skydiving for the first time and got a DVD. Works fine on
TV but in my computer (HP Pavilion xt938), I get the following error
message.

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted or it could
be using a format not compatible with Windows"

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be a marginal DVD or a marginal DVD drive. Try it on
a different PC.

PS - WMP10, Ahead Nero, WinXP Home Edition,

1) Are you attempting to play the DVD in an DVD drive, or in a CD-ROM
(CD-R/RW) drive? Attempting to play a DVD in a CD drive would definitely be
one reason for the the error you're getting. If the disk plays in a standard
DVD player on a TV, you can assume it's probably not a file corruption issue
(else it probably wouldn't work at all). The 'incompatibility' issue is
that Windows doesn't recognise the DVD file or disk type because a CD-ROM
drive can't play DVD's.

(the above may seem a silly question, but to me is the most obvious thing to
check).

If your computer does have a DVD drive, please post back!

2) Open the tower case and check the cables in your DVD drive are firmly
plugged in (if this action voids the warranty, DON'T do it - take it to an
HP service centre).

3) The DVD drive might have died, and needs replacement (take it to a HP
service centre)

4) Can you play normal DVD movies on your computer? If yes, then you'll
know it is that the problem is the DVD of your skydiving. If you can't play
the normal movie DVD you know it is some issue with the drive (check 1-3
above)

5) Could it possibly be a dvd-region issue?

In the meantime, you might get some advice from HP's site on
troubleshooting :

Thank You, Thank You,

Yes I am using a DVD drive. (Based on some other questions I've seen, that
wasn't necessarily a silly question/answer ; ))

However comma when you asked whether other DVDs played I automatically
assumed YES because I used to, and I know it still plays my music CDs. But
I decided to try again (just in case) and when I tried them, they wouldn't
play either and I get the same error message. Looks like it's time for a
new player.

Again thanks a lot. Sometimes you just need someone to state or ask the
'obvious' to get you out of your own paradigm.

HI,
Just a thought... But, do you by any chance have PowerDVD also ? Maybe an
older version ? WMP10 quit playing DVD's for me also and I'm told I need to
update/upgrade PowerDVD in order to resume playing... HTH

No I don't... It's definitely looking like my DVD drive is hosed up...
Neither WMP11(beta) nor RealPlayer or any other program I have plays it. In
addition, when I try to view the files in Explorer it says it can't read the
disk. So it's off to the store to get a new one and see what happens.
