DVD Burning Type

Hi,

I am not sure which NG this should go to either, any help would be
appreciated as to the answer or a more appropriate NG. Thanks

my new laptop has a DVD burner in it.

It claims to support both the + and the - formats

for extra compatibility.

Could anyone tell me what format I should use so I can play the DVDs in
my home DVD player.

The manual for the DVD player just says DVD, though it does only read
cd-r and cd-rw.

so can I assume that it will only do the dvd-r / dvd-rw formats.

Sure, we can tell you that. After all, we all know what kind of
player you have, EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T TELL US. Sheesh!

Best solution in that case: try different formats, unless you can get
a response from the manufacturer to your query. In any event you may
have problems with different brands in the same format, or different
production runs within the same brand. The quality of blank DVDs is
significantly more variable than the quality of blank CDs.

Gee, maybe one of the groups with "dvd" in their names, like
alt.video.dvd.tech? If you post there, give a little though to
including relevant information so you can actually get some useful
answers.

Point taken but...

when I buy a DVD from a store it has to be made in a format that all DVD
players can read, so is that the +r or -r format.

Yes there are a lot of groups with DVD in the title, I was just asking
for a bit of a pointer.

Prerecorded CDs and DVDs are made in an entirely differen't process, so
the plus R and dash R designations aren't appropriate. Many DVDs are
even double layer, which is beyond plus R and dash R capabilities. If
your prerecorded DVD has content that takes more than two hours to play,
it's probably double layer.

Try a Google search for your player manufacturer's web site to see if
there is any compatability information there.

A WIDE variety of newsgroups/forums on all sorts of topics are available
through http://groups.google.com/groups/dir . Some ISPs also provide
access to those alt and rec groups through newgroup servers you can
access with Microsoft's Outlook Express.

Perhaps by DVD it means the video format. Perhaps the manual for the burner
software would tell. Perhaps you need to contact the maker of the burner.

No, you may not.

Thanks you for the info.

I'll try goggling for my play and see what I can find.

But thanks for the info on manufacturing techniques. I will check out
the NG you suggest thanks again.
