DVD burning and system resources

After ditching the Samsung cd burner and buying an NEC2500 DVD burner, I
am no longer making coasters, but, DVD burning takes nearly all my system
resources so that nothing else is possible until the process is finished.
CD burning also consumes a lot resources compared to the SCSI burners I've
used in the past.

Is it just the nature of IDE burners that they consume so much system
resource? If not, what is wrong?

2.53 Ghz P4
512MB RAM
XP Home sp/2
Nero v.6
the NEC2500 is using Ultra DMA Mode 2

Not sure of what is causing your problem but I can assure you that this is
not "the nature of IDE burners" and you do have a problem to track down. I
use a LG DVD writer and most often burn CD/DVD in the background while
playing a game or surfing the net. No problems or noticeable slow down at
all. My system is a little slower than yours too with a 2100 and 512meg
ram.

DVD burning shouldn't be taking up that much of the resources.

Btw, if that Nero is v6.0.0 you need to get the updates for it as the
initial 6.0 release has a number of problems.

Try getting the latest IDE Drivers for your motherboard chipset.

Also play around with you're IDE configuration. eg Try NEC as master on its
own cable.

Something is wrong. I burn discs and treat it as a background process,
the impact is so minimal.
