DVD Burner Driver

Guest

I recently installed a Memorex MRX510L DVD Burner. It does not come with a
driver disc. Their tech support says it uses "generic" drivers from Windows,
however, the "new hardware wizard" cannot find any drivers, and device
properties show no driver loaded (code 28). Can anyone tell me where I might
find copies of these "generic" drivers that come with Windows. I don't have
"install" discs, just the manufacturers "restore" discs.

See if this helps.

Open Device Manager.
Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on the DVD drive and click Update Driver in the popup menu.
Select "No, not this time" > Next > Install from a list or specific location > Next >
click the box "Search removable media (floppy, cd-rom) to deselect it.
Click the Browse button and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
Click OK > Next.

If no joy, have you installed the Nero software that is provided with it? If not
do so.

If still no joy try updating the firmware for the drive:
http://www.memorex.com/html/products_detail.php?section=3&CID=11&SID=15&PID=872&FID=115&opento=11

To get the firmware click on the Support tab on the page under and to the right of
the drives graphic and description.

Tried searching sys32/drivers, wizard reports driver not found. I did install
the Nero software, that didn't help either. There is no firmware update for
this drive. Any other suggestions?

The restore disks should have set your computer back to the original
configuration. Are you sure about the model number of the drive? Can't find
it listed anyware. Look and see if there is a fcc number on the drive. Might
find a driver that way. Most burners use windows generic drivers and what
ever software comes with the burner like Nero or Roxio.

Device Manager lists it as: Memorex DVD +-RAM 510L V1. Every time I start my
comp, the new hardware wizard appears, tries to load the drivers, then tells
me hardware cannot be installed. I contacted Memorex tech support, and after
a couple of non-working suggestion, they told me the problem was with
Windows. Any ideas would be appreciated.

This maybe a foolish question but does the drive show up in My Computer?
I've looked for this model drive and can't find it. Try installing it in
safe mode. Make sure the drive is set to the proper setting like SLAVE or
MASTER. Am still looking for some info.

I've tried these, none work, Memorex informed me there are no firmware
updates for this drive.

The drive does show in My Comp. It's working, but not at top speed, and like
I said, wants to install every time I restart my comp.

I tried installing as slave, master, and on c-select, same results every time.

Only thing I can think of is to go to start-run and type in msconfig and see
if there is anything in the start up area that may be related to the drive.
I'll keep looking around.

Not to be obtuse but... has the OP tried to install the drive in
question into another known good working computer utilizing a
different cable as the only drive on the IDE cable?

troubleshooting always starts with the hardware and verifying the
drive is good and valid is the first step.

the second step is trying a known good working drive on your IDE
controller in your orginal PC and and testing that.

If all is well the thrid step is updating and or reinstalling current
chipset drivers from the chipset maker (if applicable)

Thanks George, I appreciate your help.

I got a list of the driver files needed from Memorex. Is there a way to
manually load them, since the wizard doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

The drive, cables, etc. are all good. The problem is in the installation, for
some reason, the new hardware wizard can't install it. and the wizard pops up
every time I start my comp even if I check the box not to.

Can you put them on a floppy and point to it when it wants the driver
location. Or put them in a folder then point that way.

Tried it, didn't work. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to try to
help, If you get any more ideas, I'm all ears.

Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager and remove Any/All devices listed in DVD/CD-ROM
drives, when completed close out back to the desktop.
Open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Open and delete the entire contents of the folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name folder\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Windows\Prefetch
C:\Windows\Temp
Close out back to the desktop and reboot.
Windows will redetect the device and install the drivers for it.

If Windows fails to install the drivers, check your files obtained from Memorex for
an .inf file.
Right click the file and click install in the popup menu.

If that fails to install the drivers test the drive to make sure it's not
malfuntioning.
If you're not using a 40 Pin/80 Wire ribbon cable, get one and test the drive again.

Still not installing properly. Drive appears to be working OK, it just won't
install permanently. Every time I start my comp, the new hdwr wiz pops up,
then tells me the hardware cannot be installed. Memorex has told me they
don't supply any installation software because the drive uses windows generic
drivers, therefor I have no disc with a .inf file, which I think is the main
problem.

Found a driver install pkg. at DriverGuide.com that seems to have done the
trick.

Thanks to all who offered up suggestions, I really appreciate you taking the
time to help.
