DVD and CD drives won't show up

I am getting the following in the device status:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

the message shows up on both my cd burner and my dvd burner. I've unistalled the drivers and then re-added the drives. I've also reinstalled the aspi driver too.

Any ideas?

Since it is unlikely that both your drives would stop working at the same
time due to software problem it could be hardware problem. How about
checking whether your cd and dvd drives are properly/tightly connected to
motherboard, both power and data.

code 39 is quite common and easily fixed. I lose them all the time on
various machines. see MS #314060 or better yet, go to marfers notes at
www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/xp_notes.htm Save this site in your favorites
cause it also has links to Kellys Korner, Doug Knox and the Tomsterdam. All
very intelligent XP pros.
