Hi there,

You need a "firewire" cable (aka IEEE 1394 cable) -- the
4-pin (DV device) to 6-pin version (PC).

It's a long story, but MM2's rule of thumb at this point
is that USB is used for capturing still images and the
1394 for movie images -- this dates back to when 1394 was
about 40x faster than USB v1, but now USB v2 is actually
slightly faster than 1394, but the internal assumptions
of MM2 have apparently not changed, hence the DVavi
option is grayed out for USB devices.

This from PapaJohn's websit is more likely your Sony-
specific problem:

"Sony MicroMV cameras output an MPEG-2 stream, and
Microsoft currently does not have the right to distribute
the MPEG-2 codec. You can capture using Sony's Movie
Shaker software bundled with the MicroMV's, and then use
it to export to DV-AVI for import into Movie Maker 2 for
editing. The reverse process would need to be used to
take a movie from Movie Maker 2 and export it to the
MicroMV camcorder."

I'm afraid you need to get a firewire card and cable, it is sooooo much
better, and will give you the dv-avi option.

Harry,
It won't be,a s he states he has a minidv, not micro mv, I should still
think it's usb and not firewire being the route cause. Also, firewire can
sustain transfer at 400mbs whereas usb2 although faster, is only faster in
bursts and cannot sustain the throughput, and one more little snippet, you
of course get full device control from within the app (mm2) with firewire
which you don't with usb.

Concerning digital cameras (still and motion), is that 4-
pin DV port able to accept EITHER a USB or FW cable ???

It's starting to sound like this might be true, based on
the indirect comments made here (?) -- if so, then maybe
I'll try hooking up my dc3000 via a FW cable and see what
happens... right now it's in my "re-gifting" pile of
stuff :)

btw: thanks so much for your "even tempered" responses on
this site.

No. They are different ports.

Oops, sorry, yes I replied to Harry personally and forgot to add that here
as well, thanks Rich.. Don't want to lead anyone into trying to psuh a
firewire lead into a usb port :(

Many years ago when VCR's started hitting the consumer market I was a part
time electronics tech. It was amazing what kid's (and possibly some adults)
would stick into the tape transport. I won't even go into cable
connections.
