duplicating folders

i have a string of duplicated folders that i can't delete. every time i
select the folder, it creates another duplicate. dell inspirion 2200, xp sp2.

Without knowing what folders, it is impossible to tell you. Post back with
more details, including the names and locations (C:\Program Files\foo for
ex.) of the folders.

Also please include the virus/malware status of the computer. If you think
it is clean, please tell us the names and versions of the antivirus and
antispyware programs you used to determine this.

I don't think this has anything to do with hardware.
