Duplicate personal folders in Outlook 2003

H

Hapkido

I built myself a new machine and now I'm in the long arduous process of
reinstalling all my applications. I installed Office 2003 Pro and thought I
could simply copy my backup copy of "outlook.pst" to the relevant folder and
be back where I was as on my old machine. However, I now have 2 identical
"Personal Folders". I cannot delete either and don't know how the extra one
got there. I tried uninstalling Outlook (4 times now) and then reinstalling
it but the same 2 instances of the Personal Folders resulted. I then did a
total uninstall of Office, cleaned the Registry and reinstalled it, opened
up Outlook, created a new account, closed Outlook, deleted the .pst file and
copied over my backup copy and the same 2 folders were there. I've done this
using another backup copy that is 3 months older and end up with the same
aggravating result.

What am I doing wrong???? Thanks for any and all help.

Your profile is hopelessly corrupted by all of the copying and overwriting.

Create a new mail profile and configure it to use your correct .pst file. F1 Help is your friend.

Milly,

Please bear with my novice ignorance.

1) Create a new profile: Do you mean to reinstall Outlook fresh and simply
create a new Account?
2) Configure it to use your correct .pst file: Not sure what you mean?

Are you inferring that all my folders, etc., in my backup are hopelessly
lost and they are not recoverable? Eeeeek!

I do make use of the Help file often, but generally I have a specific
question I need answered. I'm not sure what to search for from what you
wrote. Sorry.

Oliver,

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, the "Outlook-public fix profile" addon
indicated that there was nothing wrong with my .pst file. I'm still hoping
someone will know what's wrong and offer a fix. The odd thing is that
Outlook on the other outgoing machine, which I haven't wiped yet, is working
fine; no duplicate "Personal Folders". Yet when I copy it over to my new
installation it has this problem.

Brian,

Thanks.... that worked..... ALMOST!! Yes, I managed to get rid of the
duplicate folder and all my data, rules, contacts, notes, etc. are all
there. But now I have one problem that needs to be resolved. The problem is
that when I open a new mail message and click on "To:, Cc:, or Bcc", I get
the following error:

The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with
this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted or
you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder
from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Office Outlook Help.

Now, if I can fix this, I'll be home free. PLEASE...... can you or someone
tell me how I can fix this?

THANKS AGAIN..... for at least resolving the duplicate "Personal Folders"
issue.
