Can someone help me ...............

When I create a shortcut icon on the desktop a duplicate appears. If I
delete one of the duplicates then the "other" icon doesn't launch, and
following a reboot or some form of refresh the "other" icon will eventually
end up in the trach folder .

Thx in advance

You probably have a profile name that includes the "All Users" name.

Create another profile without the "All Users" name in it.

A default profile exists, which is already named "All Users" don't delete that one.

Same problem here, and my profile name is simply "Victor", There is a desktop
folder in all users and one in "Victor" but the only one that holds the
desktop shortcuts is "all users" I don't understand what to do?!

I have this problem and have been finding similar fixes around the net. My
problem is on a network, however, with multiple users having this problem.
If the user logs on locally, no problem, single icons, no duplication. I
have tried the relevant registry changes, but with a lot of shared computers

Where are the shell folder paths pointing to? for Common Desktop and Desktop

They are pointing to

C:\documents and settings\all users\desktop

and

%allusersprofile%\desktop

respectively. This is only on my test machine. I have many more machines
around the network with this same issue, though, and I cannot check them all.

Mex,

Looks like a setting in GPO. You may try changing the values through REG files at startup, or try in these groups:

windows.group_policy
win2000.group_policy
