duplicate contacts in address book

Would someone please post an acceptable work-around for the Address Book
displaying contact names twice where I have fax numbers for my contacts?

According to MS
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/305361/en-us?spid=2520&sid=996)
this behaviour is by design (horrible design if you ask me) because it allows
users to send faxes through outlook.

The MS suggestion is to move the fax numbers into a different field (such as
other phone) which is a terrible solution. (how do we tell our employees and
customers to ignore the fax field and use the 'other phone' field for the fax
number - makes us look dumb, and MS even dumber-er!!!)

I hope there is a reasonable suggestion out there - please advise.

append F or Fax to the beginning of the number.
